Bay Mau Coconut Forest, located in Cam Thanh Village near Hoi An, is a peaceful water coconut forest that has been part of local life for generations.
More than 200 years ago, villagers planted water coconut palms to protect the riverbanks from storms and erosion. Over time, the forest grew into a natural maze of small canals, fish, crabs, and birds.
For local fishermen, the forest is closely connected to the traditional basket boat. These round bamboo boats were handmade and coated with natural resin to make them waterproof. In the past, basket boats were used for fishing, catching crabs, and transporting coconuts and rice along the river.
During the war time, Bay Mau Coconut Forest was an important hiding place and secret route for local people and soldiers. The narrow waterways and dense coconut trees helped protect the village and its people.
Today, visitors can explore the coconut forest by basket boat and experience the slow and simple river life. Sitting in a round basket boat, you will glide through quiet canals, watch local fishermen cast their fishing nets, try crab fishing, and listen to stories about village life from your local boatman.
